Tilt and turn windows,
two ways to open, both from inside.
Tilt the sash in at the top to air the room, or turn it in like a door to clean the outside without a ladder. In uPVC or slim aluminium, made to measure, A-rated as standard and fitted across Suffolk and Essex by Admiral’s own team. Take a written price away, and decide in your own time.

How does a tilt and turn work? One handle, two positions.
A tilt and turn opens inwards, never out. Turn the handle one way and the sash tilts in at the top on hinges at the bottom; turn it further and the whole sash swings into the room on side hinges, like a door. Known as a continental window, it’s been the standard across much of Europe for decades.
- Tilt: a few inches of air at the top, safe and secure, even in light rain
- Turn: the whole window open, to clean both sides from indoors or to air the room fast
- Large panes and slim sightlines, for more light
- Multi-point locking all round the sash when it’s shut
Where they work best. And where they don’t.
Because the sash opens into the room, a tilt and turn solves problems an outward-opening window can’t, and needs a little space inside in return.
A tilt and turn suits
- Ground-floor windows onto a path, a drive or a patio, where an open casement would be in the way
- Upstairs windows that are hard to reach from outside: clean them from the room
- Flats, apartments and loft rooms
- Bedrooms that need an escape window, with the right hardware
- Bays, alongside fixed panes or casements
Look at another style if
- The window is over a sink, a deep sill or a worktop you use: an inward sash needs clear space, so a casement window is easier
- The house has period box sashes: sliding sash windows
- You’d like the slim steel look: Crittall-style windows, which come in tilt and turn too
Blinds and curtains need a thought: choose blinds that fit within the glass, or hang them clear of the sash’s swing.

How much do tilt and turn windows cost?
Every window is made to measure, so the price depends on the size, the frame, the colour and the glass. One of our own surveyors measures every opening for free, and you get a written quote to take away. Finance is available at 12.9% APR representative.
How do tilt and turn windows open?
With one handle. Turn it to the first position and the sash tilts in at the top for air; turn it to the second and the whole sash swings into the room like a door. Close the window before you change from one to the other.
Can a tilt and turn be a fire escape window?
Yes. Turned fully open, it gives a wide, clear opening, and it can be set up with the hardware an escape window needs. Building regulations ask for escape windows in some rooms upstairs; we check which of yours need one at the survey.
Are tilt and turn windows secure?
Yes. When they’re shut, multi-point locks hold the sash all round the frame, and when they’re tilted, the gap is only at the top, so you can air a room without leaving it open.
Are tilt and turn windows energy efficient?
Yes. The sash presses onto its seals all round, and all our windows are A-rated as standard, with triple glazing and acoustic glass available. In England, replacement windows must reach a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or energy rating Band B, and every window we offer meets or beats that.
Will the sash get in the way?
Only when it’s turned fully open, and then it swings into the room like a door. Keep the sill clear, and choose blinds that fit within the glass. Over a sink or a busy worktop, a casement is usually the easier choice.
Can tilt and turn windows go in a bay?
Yes, beside fixed panes or casements. More about bay windows.
uPVC or aluminium?
uPVC is the affordable, low-maintenance choice. Aluminium has slimmer frames for more glass, in any RAL colour. See uPVC windows and aluminium windows, or try both in our showroom.
Which areas do you cover?
We fit tilt and turn windows across Suffolk and Essex from our showroom in Ipswich, including Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Kesgrave, Stowmarket, Hadleigh, Manningtree and Colchester. Put your postcode in the quote form and we’ll confirm.
