Bay or bow? The difference is the shape.

Both stand out from the wall of the house, and both are made of several windows, or facets, joined on bay poles. A bay has straight facets set at angles; a bow is a gentle curve of equal panes.

  • Canted bay: three or more facets with angled sides, often a wide pane in the middle. The classic Victorian and Edwardian bay
  • Box bay: square sides at right angles to the house, common on 1920s and 1930s semis
  • Bow: four or more equal panes in a shallow curve, a Georgian favourite
  • Opening sashes wherever you want them, from casements to tilt and turn or sliding sashes

Replacing a bay. What we check first.

A bay is more than a window: it has angles, a sill, often a little roof, and sometimes a wall or a room above it. So our own surveyor looks at the whole bay before we price it.

At the survey

  • Every facet measured, and the angles between them
  • How the bay is built, and what sits above it
  • The sill, the bay roof and the brickwork, so you know what the bay needs before you decide
  • Which panes should open, and which way

On the day

  • The old frames out, and the old windows away with us
  • New facets joined on bay poles, with neat covers over the joints
  • Sealed, finished and cleared up behind us

Adding a bay where there isn’t one is building work, and at the front of a house it usually needs planning permission. We’ll tell you what’s involved.

Questions about bay and bow windows.

Anything else? Request a quick callback or call 01473 659062 and ask us straight.

How much does a bay window cost?

It depends on the size and shape of the bay, how many panes open, the frame, the colour and the glass, and on what the bay itself needs. Our own surveyor measures it for free, and you get a written quote to take away. Finance is available at 12.9% APR representative.

What’s the difference between a bay and a bow window?

A bay has straight facets at angles to each other, usually three, with a wide pane in the middle; a box bay has square sides. A bow is a shallow curve of four or more equal panes. Both project from the wall and are joined on bay poles.

Can you replace a bay that has a wall or a roof above it?

Usually, yes. Our surveyor checks how the bay is built and what sits above it before we quote, and if the bay needs more than new windows, we’ll tell you at the survey, before you decide.

Do I need planning permission?

Not to replace the windows in a bay you already have: on a house, that’s usually permitted development. Building a new bay is an extension, and at the front of a house it usually needs planning permission. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas have their own rules, and we check yours at the survey.

Can the windows in a bay open?

Yes, as many as you like. Each facet can be a casement, a tilt and turn or a sliding sash, with fixed panes between, and top lights above if the bay is tall.

Are bay windows energy efficient?

A new bay is far warmer than an old one. All our windows are A-rated as standard, with triple glazing and acoustic glass available, and in England replacement windows must reach a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or energy rating Band B. Every window we offer meets or beats that.

uPVC or aluminium bays?

uPVC is the affordable, low-maintenance choice, in white, grey, black, cream or woodgrain. Aluminium bays come from Smart, in over 150 RAL colours, with slimmer frames for more glass. Try both in our showroom.

Which areas do you cover?

We fit bay and bow windows across Suffolk and Essex from our showroom in Ipswich, including Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Kesgrave, Stowmarket, Hadleigh, Manningtree and Colchester. Put your postcode in the quote form and we’ll confirm.
